Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae adds a soulful twist to David Bowie’s “Heroes” and it’s bound to have you dancing around the room.

The singer teamed up with Pepsi to remake the 1977 classic for the brand’s new global futbol campaign “Now Is What You Make It” — which features a TV commercial and series of shorts to celebrate the game and music.

“We all loved the original so much, however we wanted to put some Atlanta in it, some down South in it, and a little bit of Rio in it and make it our own. We love David Bowie, and he’s a fan as well, so we just wanted to make him proud,” she said.

As far as the 90-second spot, which was shot on the lively streets of Rio De Janeiro (the host city of the 2014 World Cup), Monae said “I love everything the film stands for.”

“To me, it is all about that extraordinary burst of courage and passion which can embolden everyday people in a moment of spontaneity, which is also the message of David Bowie’s venerable song,” she detailed. “I was honored to join Pepsi for this campaign and remind people that now more than ever, we can all be heroes.”

In an interview Billboard, the 28-year-old performer revealed that she’s a big sports fan.“I admire all the players and soccer and just sports in general. The teamwork those players experience is very similar to how I have my own business, my recording label, my band and how we’re a team and when we have great shows at places like South by Southwest we can all just share in that moment and remember it for the rest of our lives,” she explained. “I was just excited to be amongst other people who can understand what that feels like.”
