One of the strongest storms on record slammed into the central Philippines on Friday, killing at least three people and forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes with winds that had one time  reached 235 mph.

Weather officials said Typhoon Haiyan had sustained winds of 147 mph with gusts of 170 mph when it made landfall. That makes it the world’s strongest typhoon this year according to the government’s weather bureau.

This storm is 3 times more powerful than Superstorm Sandy with a storm surge of over 40 feet.
