In his varied and long career, actor Orlando Jones has flipped it from comedy to drama and back again. So many people think of him as a comic actor, but he’s never done a standup show. The multi-faceted actor, who was also a high school basketball star, did start out as a comedy writer, beginning his career writing for the classic sitcom “A Different World,” then heading to “MadTV” and other shows. (He did, however, have a short-lived comedy show in 2003.)

This season, Jones gets to show his versatility once again on the new Fox show “Sleepy Hollow,” which revisits the legend of Ichabod Crane. Crane wakes up in the town of Sleepy Hollow some three centuries later to hunt the Headless Horseman, his former nemesis, who is terrorizing the town. The show is based on a short story by Washington Irving that is an allegory for the battle between good and evil. Given that “Fringe” creator J.J. Abrams is behind it, expect the creepiness factor to be high.

In this modernization, “Sleepy Hollow” boasts a Black female sheriff, played by up-and-coming actress Nicole Beharie (“42.”) Jones plays Captain Frank Irving, a New York City police office brought in to investigate the murders in the town.

“I’m country West Indian, that’s what it is,” Jones says of his lengthy career.

“Sleepy Hollow is amazing, I ain’t gon’ lie. What we’re really following is the Book of Revelation and you’ll see it in the pilot. The Headless Horseman is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and he’s being reawakened by something much more scarier than him.”

“Sleepy Hollow” premieres on Fox on Monday, September 18 at 9 p.m.
