Further details, including the cause of death, have yet to be released. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning.

Kelly, also known as “Mac Daddy,” was 34 years old.

We send our condolences out to his family and his fellow group mate Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith.

Although the cause of death has not been determined, some media outlets are reporting that Kelly’s death may have been the result of a drug overdose. Kelly’s mother did not address those speculations in a statement released Thursday morning.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1. To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him,” said his mother Donna Kelly Pratte and The So So Def Family in a statement.

The So So Def Records recording artists were best known for their 1992 hit “Jump.”
