Grammy Award-winning vocalist and one-third of popular R&B trio Destiny’s Child Michelle Williams is headed back to the stage in 2013 as she joins the cast of Fela! The Tony-nominated musical comes to Charlotte’s Blumenthal Performing Arts Belk Theater Feb. 25-26.

See what other black productions are coming to the Blumenthal.

The national recording artist who’s had success in the R&B, pop, gospel and dance music genres will play Sandra in the national tour of the Tony-nominated musical beginning January 29th in Washington, D.C. The tour is tentatively scheduled to go on to play 16 cities this year with stops in Miami, FL and Seattle, WA.

Williams is no stranger to the Broadway and musical theatre scene having successfully completed starring roles in Aida (2003) and The Color Purple (as “Shug Avery” in 2007). The former Destiny’s Child star, who has three chart-topping solo albums already under her belt, made her West End (London) debut in 2009 as the first African American to play Roxy Hart in Chicago and also reprised the role on Broadway in 2010. Most recently, Williams toured in the production What My Husband Don’t Know, which currently airs on BET.

Fela! tells the story of iconic Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti and his life as an artist, political activist and revolutionary musician.

With Williams heading back to performing at a rapid pace of up to eight shows per week, we’re wondering when she’ll have the time to promote (or finish) the upcoming gospel/inspirational album she’s reportedly been working on for the latter half of 2012. She most recently talked about the project to be released through her new deal with Light Records and her turn to her gospel roots on the past Sunday’s edition of the long-running Bobby Jones Gospel where she performed “Watch Me Praise Him.”
