Update: Grimmer details continue to emerge regarding the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT. At least 26 people are dead – including 20 children, the the 24-year-old gunman and the gunman’s mother. MSNBC reports a relative of the shooter was also found dead in a home in Newtown.
Update 6:46 p.m.: CNN reports the suspected shooter is Adam Lanza, age 20, the brother of Ryan Lanza.
Update: 5:30 p.m.: A source told CNN that it was the gunman’s mother who was found dead at a home in Newtown.
New 4:10 p.m.: Authorities initially reported that the suspect was Ryan Lanza, 24. His identity is no longer confirmed. The gunman may have been carrying his brother’s ID. Lanza’s mother was a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary. MSNBC reports she was found dead at the school. According to reports, Lanza focused his shooting spree on a kindergarten class at the school.
According to news reports, Lanza went to the school office and fired several shots. Witnesses reported hearing screams over the intercom. Lanza then went to his mother’s classroom and opened fire.
10:00 a.m. Details are still being confirmed as police try to unravel what occurred Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown CT. The entire district is on lockdown. There have been unconfirmed reports that the school principal may have been gravely injured in the shooting. There are also reports that a gunman may have been killed, and two handguns have been recovered.Mayor Mark Boughton of Danbury said there are multiple victims in the incident, but would not confirm whether the victims were children or adults.
According to an MSNBC affiliate reporter, the shooting occurred during morning meetings about 9:30 a.m. Children were gathered in the classrooms.
