“We’re an American family and we rise or fall together as a nation” said President-Elect Barack Obama during his victory speech at his Chicago headquarters in Chicago, Illinois Tuesday night. The nation’s 44th President will get a second term in office. It was 19 months of bitter and expensive campaigning, President Obama needed 270 electoral votes to secure the presidency but he received 303 electoral votes. Democrats will have a strong hold on the majority in the Senate for the next two years. The GOP needed to flip four seats to regain control of the upper chamber. That was impossible to do after the Democrats won in hotly-contested races in Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Republicans will keep control of the House of Representatives. House Speaker John Boehnersaid during last night’s election that it is a humbling moment and vowed to never take the majority for granted.
Voters in Colorado and Washington state approved referendums on the election ballot legalizing marijuana for recreational use. Colorado’s measure allows people age 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of marijuana and grow up to six plants. The law calls for taxing and regulating marijuana like alcohol and allows for the growing and sale of industrial hemp. Washington’s marijuana legalization initiative takes effect on December 6, 2012.
Maine and Maryland voters voted in support of same-sex marriage and it was the first time for voters anywhere to approve this ballot measure. The issue of same-sex marriage had been defeated in 30 states, including Maine in 2009. In Washington state, ballots on the same measure are still being counted. Minnesota voters rejected a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
