The Godfather of Soul died on Christmas day five years ago leaving R&B with a lot less soul. Brown lived in Augusta, Ga., and is remembered there with a museum exhibit at the Augusta Museum of History. The exhibit contains a several displays of Brown’s personal items ranging from shaving kits to his famous outfits to albums. On a visit this summer, I was fortunate enough to be lead on a tour by Brown’s daughters Deanna and Venetia. They shared stories about everything from how giving their father was to complete strangers to his die-hard opposition to Eddie Murphy or any comedian playing him in an autobiographical movie.

“There was nothing funny about my life,” Brown would say, according to his daughter Deanna Brown Thomas.
