Stilt walkers, motorcycles in cages, elephants and Zeke – always Zeke. In its 17th year, the UniverSoul Circus has earned its status a black entertainment institution. Each year, we watch with delight as our children marvel at the giant elephants and the clowns, but that’s not what keeps us coming back. It’s the wonder of seeing black people, our people on the highwire, walking on stilts and doing things we see in other circuses. We watch in awe as the gorgeous Jean Claude deftly winds and unwinds himself entangled in straps as he performs his aerial ballet. We get to hear our music and do our traditions, such as the Soul Train line. For a short time we get to believe in the magic with people who look like us.
