Bypassing a pair of incumbent Democrats, Charlotte’s Black Political Caucus this week endorsed two legislative newcomers among a slate of candidates in the May 4 primaries.
The group also endorsed Secretary of State Elaine Marshall in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary. However, today former Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt is expected to endorse Marshall’s opponent Ken Lewis. Gantt joins Rep. Mel Watt in endorsing Lewis, a Chapel Hill lawyer.
When caucus ballots were counted near midnight on Sunday, the caucus had endorsed newcomer John Montgomery over state Sen. Malcolm Graham in District 40 and Kim Ratliff over Rep. Becky Carney in District 102.
