Wallace’s bid to be All-Star gets help from 2nd-graders.

How’s this for a living, breathing civics lesson? There are Charlotte second-graders learning about the political process by writing Eastern Conference coaches to support Bobcats star Gerald Wallace’s All-Star candidacy.

At least that’s the reasonable conclusion, from Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson’s mail this week. He received 20-some handwritten letters, asking Woodson to vote for Wallace as an Eastern Conference reserve.

One of those letters, written by Keegan Dunphy, laid out Wallace’s statistics and thanked Woodson for his consideration, on Bobcats-orange stationery.

Wallace was surprised and touched when the Observer told him about the letters pre-game Friday and showed him the one from Dunphy. One of Wallace’s children is also a second-grader.

“Something like that – when I have kids of my own – is just amazing,” Wallace said, a huge grin on his face. “It’s one of those moments when you just smile because words can’t put into effect how you’re feeling.”

Now that starters have been selected by the fans, the 15 coaches from each conference will vote on the seven reserves for each team, to be announced Jan.28
